New Work -

Here is a new piece I came up with
using a bead made of silver glass using techniques I learned from a Haley Tsang class in silver glass.

I paired it with some crystals I had stashed away, some aurora rondells and silvery gray pearls.

It took several tries it get it where I wanted it but I think it turned out well. The picture appears a little darker than the piece actually is.

When finished, it reminded me of Elsa, the ice queen in the Disney movie, Frozen. There are matching earrings and bracelet.

August 2016

It is sad to see such a neglected blog - what can I say except I would rather be torching or traveling.

But it's time to update. We Foxes will be heading to Oaks, PA for Beadfest Summer Expo, August 19 - 21.

It's a great show, not as overwhelming as Bead and Button can be (and with free parking!) and vendors from all over the country.

Will be post a discount coupon for entry to the Expo as soon as I get it.

But in the meantime, here's a BeadPen designed by one of my customers using my disk beads and silver glass beads.

Birmingham Community House - "Our Town Art Show and Sale"

My work will be part of the "Our Town Art Show & Sale", taking place Thursday, October 15 - Saturday, October 1. Hours 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. There is no admission fee.

It's a great show - Opening Night Party is on Wednesday the 14th and there is a fee for that. It opens on Wednesday night and closes on Saturday.

It takes over the first two floors of the building - there is art everwhere!

I will have 4 pieces in the show - and here are two of them.

The color of the one on the right gets lost in the photo. It looks like moonstones.

October Already...

As per my usual - I am behind in my site.

I was fortunate to spend 2 weeks in Sicily and Italy mid-September and that was a wonderful experience I shall never forget for so many reasons.

I came home and got to work on things for two shows, Bead Bonanza and Our Town.

I would much rather work on my glass than my sites but it is a necessary evil. I often joke that I need to hire a teenager to take care of these things.

At any rate, here is one of my newer pieces.

I was inspired by the glass jewelry I saw on an Italian cruise ship last fall as well as much of the glass jewelry I saw in Venice and Murano -

The pieces tended to be very simple and very elegant.

Hope to get a few more pics up in the next week or so.

My Mask Beads

Back in April, we went to Costa Rica for 10 days. Loved the vegetation and of course the animals! It got to the point seeing a crocodile was no big deal anymore.

One of the things I fell in love with on the trip were masks made by the Bocura People who live in South-Pacific Costa Rica. They carve the most beautiful masks made of balsa wood.

I ended up buying two - to go along with my Mexican carved masks and animals.

At any rate, I have been trying to translate the masks into glass. It has been a trip with a serious learning curve.

At any rate, here are my attempts at translation. Certain details can't be translated, at least not with my skills.

The wooden masks contain so many different surface planes covered in patterns I can't do it. But it is a journey...

Meet Milagra

This is not lampwork but it is my creative side in a different medium.

Last February while in Puerto Vallarta I took a doll workshop at ART VallARTA. Rebecca Roth of Original Friends (www.prisondolls.com) was our instructor and guide.

Her name Milagra, milagro is Spanish for "miracle" -  and I just finished her last night.(that was it's own miracle!)

We  started with a fabric form, from there you were on your own. I painted the entire body of mine, the cloth for the underskirt and myself. Of course I did the her face as well.

I knew I wanted to incorporate something "Mexican" into the doll and thought of milagros - religious folk charms that you see thru out Mexico.

Her skirt is decorated with the milagros and she has one at her throat.

I am happy with her, though I may add some more milagros.

You can never have too many miracles.

Check out their website, theirs is a wonderful and heartwarming story.
